did about a 10K or so in 43 minutes. was hoping to get it under 42:00 but this wasn't that bad considering the energy i exerted on the hills yesterday. i was a little sore from them.

going to keep mileage down this week in preparation for a 10K this weekend. last year i got 4th in my age group with a time of 46:26 so i'm looking to slash at least 3 minutes off that. getting a sub 40:00 or 41:00 would be awesome. and definitely good for a placing in my age group. maybe i can win back some money it cost to enter.

Good luck - wish I could place in my age division. Its a lot more competitive in SoCal. Its more like 30 minutes to place in a 10k. I have to break 40 minutes first myself - hopefully next month. Best of luck to you.

Hey Tony,

McMillian running calculator (http://www.mcmillanrunning.com/mcmillanrunningcalculator.htm) shows that, based on your marathon time, you should be able to run a 40:41 10k. Reading your marathon race report I personally think a sub 40 is not out of the question! In fact, there is no reason you should not be able to get a sub 40:00 a relatively flat course. Go for it and good luck!

Thanks dudes.

Adam - Yeah, most of the races I've done so far have been ones that any elite on the blog could own. They're still fun though.

Derhammer! Woah, nice tool!! wow, that would just be awesome if I could do a sub 40:00. It will be a fully flat course, so yeah, definitely not out of the question. I should have the energy to run at my absolute max for the 6.2 miles or so. So we'll see. I'm just gonna go hard the whole way because I know there is no way I'll burn out in less than 6 miles. Thanks for the encouragement!

Tony -

I am reading through you blog and see that you are having quite a bit of trouble with your knees. I suggest you pick up some Animal Flex. Google it or go to DPS nutrition and order some. I think it has really helped me. Also, pick up a copy of Advanced Marathon Training by Pete Pfitzinger - I think it will be enlightening. I know it is hard to run slow, but you must try to limit yourself to no more than 2 hard workouts a week. Each workout should be followed by a recovery run day. Your body will thank you, and you will be able to run your hard days harder. Also, be careful of increasing mileage while running so hard. Sooner or later this type of training will catch up to your body. I am not against the faster paced stuff - I think it is good for you - (just don't tell anyone I told you that! haha) - but be sure to run slow and short - say 5-6 miles - on your recovery days. Good luck.

Hey Derhammer,

Actually the knee problem was all because of the more expensive running shoes. I went back to running in my cheap $30 nike competes, and the knee pain is non existant, save for when I'm pounding it out down a hill, which happens to anyone I think. When I'm really working hard I get a little, but not enough to make me concerned or need to slow down my pace. It's probably just left over from the "better" shoes. So yeah, as of now, nah, no problems with my knees and I plan on it being that way.

I do have one small concern and that is my knees are always cracking. But no pain. I read that if there is no pain, don't worry about it. It also happens with other joints in my body after working out.

Hey just wanted to let you guys know that I finished the 10K today with a 40:29, happy with it, and a PR by 6 minutes, but I think I had a sub 40 in me and just didn't prepare well enough.

Tony - Congrats man! I mean, look at this time compared to your 1st 10k @ 46 plus. Wow! Plus, you just ran a 3:10 marathon recently. I am amazed.
